Punctuality is praised as a virtue, but arriving early is a stranger thing altogether. The early guest is a nuisance: the host is still barefoot, the food is not out, and the conversation must be improvised twenty minutes ahead of schedule. Yet those who arrive early are rarely trying to be difficult. They are, if anything, anxious — they have budgeted for a traffic jam that never came. What we call rudeness is often just a private calculation that happened to go right, and the rest of us, standing in our unpressed shirts, resent them for it.
