It took Nora four evenings, after her official hours, to build a paper trail she had no authority to be building. Wartime correspondence, cross-referenced against tax records nobody had thought worth restoring, put the Adler family's disappearance and Elsa Voss's purchase in the same narrow week. A compensation claim, filed years later by someone signing themselves "on behalf of the surviving Adler line," had been stamped, simply, "file incomplete," and never reopened.

She brought all of it to Daniel, not diplomatically this time. "They tried to claim it back," she said, "and somebody in this building made sure the file stayed incomplete. Was that you, or was it already like that when you found it?"
