The Answer

That night Marek did something he could not fully explain. He sat down at the kitchen table and wrote a letter himself.

He did not pretend to be Emilia. He wrote that a stranger now lived in flat four, that two envelopes had arrived, and that a woman had come to the square on Thursday with bread in her bag. He wrote that the clock was still broken and that someone should probably tell the council about it. Then he added his own address at the bottom, in careful, round letters.
